CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — If Tommy Winton taught us anything last season, it’s this: freshmen are not only going to start playing earlier and often in the high school ranks, they’re going to start making bigger and bigger splashes.
And with big splashes come far-reaching ripples.
Oddly enough, the rising Catholic sophomore was on hand Saturday at Austin Peay to watch the Kentucky/Tennessee Future Stars football games.
Winton was playing in the event a year ago. Now he enters the 2019 season holding offers from the likes of Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt and was the 2018 5Star Preps Offensive Underclassman of the Year.
We first learned of Winton during 2018 summer 7-on-7 workouts. And while that gave us a decent heads up on what type of impact he would make on the 2018 Fighting Irish, we traveled to the Futures Games this past Saturday to more quickly discover the incoming class of ninth-grade talent.
Not to mention, we caught a glimpse of the Class of 2024 kids who will be in high school for the 2020 season.
So, here’s what we found out Saturday and who we think will be instant impact players. Here’s a hint: Catholic, Powell and Alcoa are getting some good ones …
