Maybe Powell High School football coach Matt Lowe said it best when, during the Knoxville 7-on-7 Classic in July, he attributed the trend of freshmen playing more frequently on the varsity level to “a trickle-down effect” from college football.
It’s hard to argue that.
And it’s also hard to ignore where high school football is headed.
Over the last decade, college football coaches have increased their tendencies of offering scholarships to middle-school players, as some 13- and 14-year-old nowadays are as polished and physically developed as high school players.
Simply put: a portion of incoming ninth-graders are just much more equipped and prepared now to play immediately.
