MORRISTOWN – Sevier County standout Wes Maples had plenty of motivation late in the third quarter Friday with Sevier County trailing Morristown East by 11 in the District 2-AAA tournament semifinals.
The top-seeded Smoky Bears were floundering after East’s Cole Henson hit a 3-pointer from the wing with 2:33 to play in the third quarter to put the No. 4 Hurricanes up 41-30.
“I knew I had to step up,” said the 6-foot-3 Maples, who was the MVP of the district in the regular season.
“Their bench was talking to me, telling me I wasn’t good and stuff like that,” he said. “It kind of fired me up.”
