Full discloser: I’m a sucker for a great sports uniform.
As an impressionable teenager in the early 1990s, I fell in love with the revolution set forth by the Fab Five’s baggy Michigan basketball uniforms. I bit on the lure of Florida State’s football jersey flare, and the marriage of the Charlotte Hornets’ color palette to a lineup of promising young talent made me a fan of their franchise for a spell.
But my passion for sports uniforms pales in comparison to that of Chad Fields’.
Known as @CFieldsVFL on Twitter, Fields has cultivated quite the name for himself on social media for his uniform knowledge and design/redesign capabilities.
So we commissioned him to begin working on a project: Take some of our area high school football teams’ uniforms and helmets and flip them — reimagine them and redesign them into whatever he wants.
What better place to start than with the teams that reached the 2019 BlueCross Bowl Championships?
In Part 1, Fields redesigned the looks of 5A champion Central and 1A runner-up Greenback and provided commentary on what prompted his decisions and design direction.
