MARYVILLE — Despite a slew of championship banners, including one from last season, mounted just beyond the North end zone, the Maryville football team took the field Friday night as underdogs.
You see, top-ranked Oakland was coming to town, and the Patriots were billed to be unbeatable. There was an Oklahoma commit and a South Carolina one, too. And the backfield had a pair of 100-yard rushers from Week 1.
Independence football coach Scott Blade told 5Star Preps earlier in the week that it would take a “special team” to beat Oakland this season, just days after Oakland routed his Eagles 46-7 in Week 1.
Maryville turned out to be that special team.
