OLIVER SPRINGS – It was a beautiful Tuesday evening, and the Oliver Springs girls’ softball team was honoring one of the top players in program history.
Pitcher Courtney Jones, who as a sophomore in 2013 led the Lady Bobcats to their only state tournament appearance, was presented her retired No. 8 jersey prior to the game against Greenback.
Most everybody in this small town knows about Jones, who went on to pitch for Tennessee Wesleyan. She’s currently a nurse at University of Tennessee Medical Center and lives in Oliver Springs.
“I know of her,” sophomore first baseman Megan Armstrong said. “I used to watch her pitch when I was little. She’s a really good pitcher.”
Matt Headden, who’s coached the Lady Bobcats since 1997, dittos that about Jones.
“She was really good,” Headden said. “All four years she was here we were really good.”
The Lady Bobcats are trying to replicate those times with Jones.
