MURFREESBORO – The trophy case at Alcoa High School is about to get a little more crowded.
Alcoa won the Division I Boys Small School Track & Field Team Championship on Tuesday at Rockvale High School outside Murfreesboro.
And it was close.
The Tornadoes edged runner-up Pearl-Cohn, 102.5 to 98, to claim the first boys track & field team championship in school history.
Major Newman and Jordan Harris, two of Alcoa’s football standouts, highlighted the win Tuesday with individual victories in the triple jump and long jump.
Newman won the triple jump with a mark of 41-7.5.
Harris claimed the long jump in 22-11.25.
Three Alcoa athletes placed in the top five of the state decathlon. Jude Green finished second in the decathlon while Landon Ford and Braxton Baumann took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Those three earned the Tornadoes a combined 17 points heading into Tuesday’s field events and running events.
Other area winners Tuesday include: Matthew Bretscher (L&N, pole vault, 13-0) and Kevin Burkett (Gatlinburg-Pittman, shot put, 56-2).
GIRLS
Gatlinburg-Pittman’s girls track team finished sixth in the Small School championship.
Sydney McCarty won girls’ long jump at 17-10.5. Stefani Johnson won the 1600 in 5:27.29, and Lily Stinnett took the 800 in 2:25.74.
The Lady Highlanders won the 4 x 800 relay in 10:21.58.
Other area winners included: Ariya Rice (Austin-East, 400 meter, 1:00.37) and Lexi Bates (NVA, 300 hurdles, 48.59).
