OAK RIDGE — West girls’ soccer coach Xandy van den Berg wanted to test his team against top competition last weekend at the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg.
The Lady Rebels went 0-3 with losses to Greeneville (4-0), Pope John Paul II (3-2), and Sacred Heart of Kentucky (3-0).
“I put us in the top division at the Smoky Mountain tournament because last year we won pretty big (at the same tournament),” van den Berg said, “and I wanted to challenge us going into the district and playing good teams down the road. It showed them when they have pressure on them, the speed of play needs to go up, and that’s really what I wanted them to see.”
West showed plenty of speed and kept the pressure on Oak Ridge during a 6-0 victory night Tuesday night in a District 3-AAA match.
