ALCOA — Zach Lunsford, the Alcoa High School starting quarterback heading into this fall, thought he was ready to grip the reins of the Tornadoes offense when thrust under center as an unproven sophomore in the early weeks of the 2020 season.
If you’re going to try and steer a program as successful as Alcoa’s you’d better be confident when you step on the field, regardless of your experience level or age.
Championships are expected. Losses aren’t digestible, especially not to Blount County rival Maryville.
But what came to pass that fall for Lunsford wasn’t ideal — more like a crash course on handling adversity.
Now, some two years later, he’s set to prove himself as the undisputed QB1 of the Tornadoes, showing early signs of what’s to come on Wednesday night during Alcoa’s 7-on-7 passing day against visiting Webb School of Knoxville.
As for the Spartans, they showed some new wrinkles offensively against Alcoa with senior quarterback Charlie Robinson and a new offensive coordinator.
