Luke Smith watched his first game of team camp as Catholic’s new basketball coach in early June and felt like he’d been away from high school ball for a long time.
That’s because he had been.
Smith was a star guard and Mr. Basketball finalist for Catholic in 2017, the year he graduated, before playing two seasons at Sewanee, sitting out a season under NCAA transfer rules, and playing the past two seasons at Belmont.
He was announced as Catholic’s next coach last Nov. 4 to replace his mentor, Mike Hutchens, who a week earlier announced his retirement at season’s end.
Smith was playing as a fifth-year senior for Belmont when he got the Catholic job, so while balancing basketball and academics – he’s about to get his master’s degree in business from Belmont – he began prepping for his next move.
“I watched every (Catholic) game this past year,” he said.
