ELIZABETHTON — Derrick Smith was in the right place at the right time for Science Hill.
As Elizabethton worked their way downfield with roughly eight minutes remaining, sophomore QB Jeriah Griffin heaved a pass on second down, trying to inject some life into the Cyclones while being down two scores.
But instead of hitting his intended receiver, Griffin placed the ball right into Smith’s hands.
“That’s how you do it,” Science Hill coach Stacy Carter said. “You gotta intercept one. That was a good offense we were up against.”
The Hilltoppers held on to its 17-7 lead after the interception and broke their four-game losing streak against Elizabethton at Citizen Bank Stadium on Friday night, despite racking up 16 penalties.
