Entering Friday’s Class 5A state semifinal at Catholic High School, Jason Merritts had four career catches for 56 yards.
A tailback by trade, the junior was the unlikeliest of targets for Central quarterback Dakota Fawver late in the fourth quarter, when the Bobcats needed a conversion on third-and-11 to be able to run out the clock on the defending state champions.
But Central coach Bryson Rosser felt Catholic would bring heavy pressure. And so his call was for a screen pass — to Merritts.
