West’s football team didn’t win any style points Saturday night but left Bearden with a statement victory.
The Rebels overcame 15 penalties for 135 yards and defeated the Bulldogs 27-7 in the season opener for both teams.
West (1-0) had two touchdowns called back for holding penalties.
“We’re playing a (Bearden) team about twice our size,” West coach Lamar Brown said, “a school about twice our size, and to come over here on the road (and win) in an opening game in an ugly football game is big.”
