Jordyn Potts was smiling before he snapped the ball.
On third-and-11 with a 10-point lead, the Powell quarterback didn’t hesitate when he took the snap and looked down the near sideline as wideout Gianni Magdos was crossing the field in that direction.
With some separation between himself and two Oak Ridge defenders, Magdos hauled in Potts’ pass and got into the end zone uncontested for the 42-yard touchdown.
The score did more than just give Powell its largest lead of the game. It was an impassioned response after Panthers’ defensive end Cardell Thomas suffered a lower left leg injury and was carted off the field just plays before.
The injury was the lone blight on an otherwise dominating performance for Powell, which bested Oak Ridge 30-14 for a key region win Friday. Powell took over sole possession of first place in Region 3-5A.
