ALCOA – If Brian Nix’s players didn’t take him seriously about Tyner Academy’s capability to hang in with them, the Rams gave them plenty of reason to buy in to that message at halftime.
In the week leading up to the meeting between Tennessee’s Class 2A and Class 3A No. 1 teams in Tyner and Alcoa, respectively, the Tornadoes’ second-year head coach wanted his team to be aware that the Rams couldn’t afford to be overlooked.
After all, Tyner had only allowed 20 points combined all season.
Alcoa led just 7-0 at halftime and Tyner’s offense drove down and scored on its opening drive of the third quarter to pull within 1, but a dominating defensive effort and an offense that found a rhythm behind running backs Elijah Cannon and Jordan Harris in the second half helped the Tornadoes to a 42-18, non-region win on Friday at Goddard Field.
