There have been more hiccups than usual and a season-ending injury to a star player, but Maryville coach Derek Hunt couldn’t be more upbeat heading into Friday’s Class 6A quarterfinal game against Science Hill at Shields Stadium.
That’s because Hunt loves the way his Rebels have looked adversity dead in the eye — despite dropping three regular-season games for the first time since 2000 and losing running back Noah Vaughn (broken leg).
“Obviously (losing three games) is not something we’re used to, but or kids have played their guts out,” said Hunt.
“I could not be prouder of their grit and the job the kids have done handling adversity. The kids haven’t listened to the critics, even if the critics are in their own homes.
“The kids have not flinched.”
