CHATTANOOGA — Davey Gillum, the Anderson County High School football coach, thought his Anderson County football team had maybe faced all the adversity it was going to see.
From the recent years of frustrating playoff losses to a season-ending injury to his QB1 in 2021, surely the football gods would make the Mavs’ 4A state semifinal a cakewalk, right? After all, they’d finally cleared the Greeneville quarterfinal hurdle last week and maybe deserved a break.
But, no.
The start Friday at Red Bank for the Mavericks was nothing short of nightmarish.
But like so many times before, Anderson County got back up off the mat and fought.
