DIVISION II-A EAST
The six-time defending state-champion CAK boys golf team will get its opportunity to make it seven in a row.
And the CAK girls program, which has three titles but none since 2016, will get a chance to end that drought.
Both programs won the Division II-A East Region Tournament on Tuesday at Three Ridges, securing their spots in the Oct. 12-13 event held at Sevierville Golf Club.
Led by freshman Tanner Varney, the CAK boys fired a 6-over 294 team mark, edging out First Baptist Academy (Powell, Tenn.) by just two shots. FBA, as runner-up, will still advance to state.
A week ago, Varney shot an 8-under 64 to capture medalist honors in CAK’s district tournament.
This time, he shot 68 and had to battle Maryville Apostolic standout Collin Keino in a playoff for medalist. Varney won that honor on the third playoff hole, nearly driving the par-4 first and making a tap-in birdie.
Keino and Grace Christian’s Jacob Rose (69) will advance as individuals to state.
Bryson White (73), Cooper Russell (73), and Alex Gaetz (80) completed CAK’s team total with Varney’s 68.
Lane Stokes (72) and Cooper Roberts (73) paced FBA, which also got a 74 from Brady Morris and 77 from Max Green.
In the girls’ division, CAK won comfortably, as Isabella Coughlin (71) and Alexis Fishel (74) gave the Lady Warriors a 1-over 145 total. Boyd-Buchanan finished runner-up at 159 to grab a qualifying spot for state.
Coughlin’s 71 proved to be the low round on the girls’ leaderboard.
Lakeway Christian’s Addison Newman (76) and The King’s Academy’s Lily Kate McKinney (86) advanced to state as individuals.
REGION 1-A
The Alcoa boys golf team and South Greene girls will return to the Class A State Tournament, after making appearances in 2022 and after their region tournament wins Tuesday at Graysburg Hills.
Riley Parsons fired a 5-over 77 and Noah Whitten an 80 to pace Alcoa’s boys to a 332 winning mark, the Tornadoes finishing 20 shots ahead of runner-up University High.
Kolben Gregg of South Greene won medalist honors with a 75 and will advance to state as an individual, along with Carter’s Riley Branch (80) and Cumberland Gap’s Matthew McCorkel (80).
On the girls’ side, Maylei Hildenbrand of South Greene took medalist honors with a 79, and that score — paired with Lindsey Howlett’s 84 — gave South Greene a 163 and 35-shot win.
Chuckey-Doak’s Layla Fox (89), Cumberland Gap’s Mahala Walker (97) and Sullivan East’s Layla Campbell (101) earned state-qualifying spots as individuals Tuesday.
The Class A state tournament will be held Oct. 12-13 at Sevierville Golf Club.
