For Eli Owens, the dream to play big-time football began as a 6-year-old.
Watching his uncle Zach play quarterback at William Blount High School in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Eli Owens admittedly felt back then like he might as well have been watching NFL players; he looked up to him that much.
“I remember I used to ask my grandmother why he wasn’t playing on Sundays,” Eli recalled. “I wanted to be like him and get to that level.
“And now that I’m here at that level, and that I’ve been lucky enough to have an opportunity to play at the other level, it’s just about getting better. And in football, if I get to college and the NFL isn’t for me, I’m going to go and hopefully coach. But I can go be the best man I can be.”
First things first, though.
Owens had to pick his college destination, and the Alcoa High School junior tight end did that this week.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Owens announced on Thursday that he has committed to the University of Michigan.
