Two weeks from the football season opener, Clinton and Christian Academy of Knoxville continued fine-tuning their teams during a scrimmage Friday night.
The host Warriors scored three touchdowns to Clinton’s two touchdowns when the starting units were on the field.
“We’ve just got a lot of learning to do,” Clinton interim head coach Jason Hammock said. “We’ve still got a lot of young guys. We’ve got one returning starter on defense and three on offense.
“We’ve got a lot of guys who’ve got to step up, a lot of studying to do, a lot of learning. At times, they weren’t doing what they’re taught to do, but hey, that’s why we do these (scrimmages), to get ready.”
Clinton (6-7) advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals last year before losing to Walker Valley 24-20. The Dragons start the 2024 season Aug. 23 at Cleveland.
CAK (4-7) lost at Christ Presbyterian Academy of Nashville 42-6 last year in the first round of the Division II-AA state playoffs.
The Warriors open this season Aug. 23 at Our Lady of Providence in Clarksville, Ind., across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky.
“I’m proud of how we competed (in Friday’s scrimmage),” CAK coach Chad Speck said. “We’re starting to fly around and play to the standard that we expect of them. That’s been the theme all preseason, is can we fight for the standard and believe in what we’re trying to do. There’s a certain level of urgency that we’re trying to get, and you’re starting to see it.”
