Carter’s football team got a first-hand look Thursday night at the playmakers of Webb School of Knoxville.
Shavar Young made a big impression.
The junior receiver and Clemson commitment caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Cruise Cunningham as the Spartans posted a 7-0 victory over Carter in the KOC Kickoff Classic at Karns.
“We literally have safety over the top help over there,” Carter coach Todd Helton said of Young’s TD catch. “But when you’re trying to guard Shavar Young, that’s basically like telling our kids they’re guarding a kid going to Clemson.
“That’s special for our kids to be able to compete against that, and that kid’s just a special athlete.”
The Carter-Webb matchup was the first of four 12-minute scrimmages Thursday. The second night of the KOC Kickoff Classic is Friday at Gibbs.
Cunningham, a senior, started Webb’s first series, which lasted three plays. His first pass attempt was dropped, and his next pass went for the TD to Young.
Then Cunningham went to the bench for the rest of the scrimmage.
Junior Gage Porter was Webb’s QB for the second and last series. He completed 2 of 3 passes for 17 yards and had three carries for 4 yards, which included a sack for minus-5 yards.
Carter’s two possessions ended with interceptions thrown by sophomore Brody Sparks, who completed 3 of 5 passes for 27 yards.
Bradyn Hooker and Greg Tate had interceptions for Webb.
Sparks completed 3 of 5 passes for 27 yards.
“I’m proud of the way our kids competed,” Helton said. “Our quarterback’s still 15 years old. He’ll be fine. He makes the right reads. Sometimes he holds onto the ball too long. We’re blessed to have him.”
