Last season, the Bearden High School boys’ golf team broke a 40-year drought in securing a TSSAA state tournament berth.
Now, the Bulldogs are going back again.
Bearden senior Bryce Harmon shot an 8-under-par 64 Tuesday at Oak Ridge Country Club to earn medalist honors and catapult his team to the Region 2-AA championship and automatic spot in the field at state.
The Bulldogs finished 4-under 284 and won by nine over Maryville (293) and Halls (293). Oak Ridge was fourth at 297.
Bearden finished third last week at Three Ridges in the District 4-AA Tournament behind Maryville and Oak Ridge.
But Harmon, who shot 73 at District, came through with an all-timer of a round. And teammate Charlie Culbertson played big, too — firing a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. Conner Hall (74) and Dane Helzer (75) helped comprise Bearden’s winning 284 mark.
Oak Ridge senior Jack Benz (66), Hardin Valley junior Jake Sheffield (69) and Halls senior Evan Caldwell (70) secured individual berths into the TSSAA State Tournament, which will be played Oct. 10-11 at Sevierville Golf Club. Caldwell won his spot in a playoff with Maryville’s Jack O’Quinn (70).
On the girls’ side, Hardin Valley Academy will make its first-ever appearance as a team in a TSSAA state tournament. The Lady Hawks shot 3-over 147 to edge Maryville (150), West (155), Farragut (156), Halls (156) and Gibbs (160) in a highly competitive Region 2-AA Tournament field.
Addisyn Newman, a freshman at Hardin Valley, signed for a 2-under 70 to earn medalist honors, winning that in a playoff against Maryville’s Rylee Tucker.
Newman’s score was paired with Rylee Taylor’s 77 for the winning 147 total.
Tucker, of Maryville, still advanced as an individual thanks to her 70. Farragut sophomore Harper Holmes (75) and William Blount senior Sophia Gambini (75) qualified for state as individuals, as well.

The Kingston boys golf team, which has won the last three Division I, Class A, state championships, will compete for a possible fourth in a row Oct. 7-8 at Sevierville Golf Club. The Yellow Jackets got there by winning their sixth consecutive Region 2-A Tournament, doing so on Monday by seven shots at Springbrook.
Nate Backus (79), Hayden Weaver (79), Kaiden Gurney (80) and John Howell (81) used that team scoring balance to their advantage, and their 31-over 319 total bested Oliver Springs (326), Loudon (327), McMinn Central (334), Tellico Plains (377) and Oneida.
Oliver Springs freshman Maddox Tackett earned medalist honors with a 6-under 66. He, Loudon’s Ben MacKintosh (72) and McMinn Central’s Landon Harris (73) all qualified for next week’s state tournament as individuals.
The Kingston girls qualified, as well, with a 216 total. Tellico Plains’ Abbi Wear shot 106 to win medalist. She, Loudon’s Samantha Snider (115) and Meigs County’s Tensley Peaden (106) qualified for state as individuals.
