ALCOA – If the Alcoa softball team reaches the Class 2A state tournament in May, it should be well prepared.
The Lady Tornadoes continued their challenging non-district schedule Wednesday afternoon by beating visiting Gibbs 5-4.
Senior right-hander Gabby Burkhart and junior right-hander Makenna McCarter combined on a six-hitter for Alcoa (23-6), the Class 2A state champion in 2022.
Gibbs (23-3) won the Class 3A state championship last year.
“We like playing these big games,” McCarter said. “We have a lot of them, and having good competition gets us ready for the state tournament.”
Alcoa avenged an 11-9 loss at Gibbs on March 18.
Alcoa has beaten Class 4A powers Halls (twice), Farragut, and William Blount this season, and has a victory over Class 3A power Heritage.
