DIVISION II, CLASS A GOLF TOURNAMENT
Some eight years have passed since the CAK Lady Warriors have had a team or individual state golf champion. Well, they’re in position for both heading into Tuesday’s final round of the Division II-A State Tournament.
CAK shot a 2-under 138 to rest atop the girls’ team standings after Day One, enjoying a 10-shot advantage over second-place Boyd-Buchanan (148) and Providence Christian (148). Evangelical Christian School trails by 11 at 149 in the six-team field.
Isabella Coughlin, a junior at CAK, birdied two of her final four holes Monday on the Highland Course at Sevierville Golf Club to open with a 3-under 67. She trails Isabella Johnson of Providence Academy by one stroke with one round to play.
Alexis Fishel of CAK tied for fifth Monday at 71 and teammate Grady Thomas placed in 10th at 76.. Lakeway’s Riley Reed tied for seventh at 75.
In boys’ golf in Division II-A, the CAK Warriors rallied on the back nine Monday to move into second place after Round One. Their 7-over-par 295 total on the River Course at Sevierville Golf Club placed them just one shot off the lead of Jackson Christian School. Battle Ground Academy (297), Franklin Road Academy (301) and Grace Christian Academy of Knoxville (302) are all still very much in contention, as well.
CAK won six consecutive team title but was denied its seventh in a row last fall at state. The Warriors nearly played themselves out of contention Monday this time around, going a combined 10 over as a team through the first six holes. CAK shot a collective 4 under on the back nine Monday to rebound, though.
Bryson White, who shot a back-nine 33 en route to his opening 69, is the Division II-A boys individual leader heading into Tuesday’s final round. His score set the pace by one stroke over both Houston Brasfield (USJ) and Brady Ray (BGA).
Grace’s Joel Crisp and Jacob Rose each carded a 72 to tie for fifth.
CAK’s Tyler Stafford shot 73 to join a group of five players in a tie for ninth. Stafford’s teammate Tanner Varney overcame a 4-over-after-four-holes start with four back-nine birdies. He shot 73, too.
DIVISION I, CLASS A GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Kingston boys golf program has won the last three Division I-A state golf championships. And while it was a feat for this year’s Yellow Jackets just to continue the program’s streak of state tournament appearances, they won’t be four-peating on Tuesday.
Signal Mountain led the Division I-A boys tournament after Day One at 13-over 301, followed by contenders Stewart County (305) and McKenzie (317). Kingston was in eighth place at 365. John Howell led the Yellow Jackets with an 83.
Brayden Helle of Signal Mountain led individually at 1-under 71. South Greene’s Kolben Gregg was tied for fifth at 74.
Cumberland Gap’s Matthew McCorkel and Oliver Springs’ Maddox Tackett were the area’s low scorer in the boys’ Division I-A field with rounds of 76 and 78, respectively.
On the girls’ side, Cascade is in line to win its first girls’ team championship, posting 10-over 150 to lead after the first 18 holes. Stewart County (153) and Signal Mountain (166) could give chase on Tuesday.
Kingston was eighth on Monday at 262.
Individually, Westview’s Maddie Gray earned low-round honors for the first round with her 2-over 72.
