Football continues to evolve.
With each passing season, more and more underclassmen not only grace the field but they contribute in major roles. Some as freshmen and sophomores.
And even eighth-graders.
So, we at 5StarPreps.com, offer our inaugural 5Star Preps Underclassman Team for the 2019 football season.
PLEASE NOTE: Player selection is based off VARSITY performance, not JV or freshman games.
2019 5Star Preps UNDERCLASSMAN Team
OFFENSE
QUARTERBACKS
Kaden Martin (Catholic, soph): Taking over as starter mid-season, Martin threw 11 touchdowns and ran for nine.
Keaton Harig (Loudon, soph): Harig threw for 2,120 yards and 34 touchdowns in a semifinal run.
Collin Shannon (Sevier County, soph): Shannon threw for 2,636 yards and 24 TDs. He also ran for five scores.
RUNNING BACKS
Keondre Jarmon (Catholic, soph): Jarmon ran for 1,021 yards and 10 TDs in his second season starting.
Desean Bishop (Karns, fresh): Bishop ran for 1,024 yards and 16 touchdowns in 10 games.
Mason Gudger (Greeneville, soph): Gudger averaged 9.5 yards per carry, ran for 1,253 yards and 17 TDs.
Jai Hundley (West, fresh): Hundley got 93 carries and ran for 681 yards and 10 scores.
Kendall Jackson (Oak Ridge, soph): Jackson caught fire midseason and wound up with 914 yards and 11 TDs.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Adarius Redmond (Powell, fresh): Led Powell in receiving yards (678), yards per catch (24.2) and receiving TDs (12)
J.J. Foust (Powell, fresh): Foust hauled in 27 catches for 422 yards and four TDs to go with 46 tackles on defense.
Semy Turner (Loudon, fresh): Turner had 27 catches for 364 yards and six TDs in a semifinal run by Loudon.
Bryson Vowell (Anderson County, fresh): The 6-3 Vowell tied for the team lead in TD catches with six.
ATHLETES
Tommy Winton (Catholic, soph): Led Irish in receptions and kick returns and averaged 9.3 yards per carry.
Shannon Blair (West, soph): Blair caught 18 passes for 262 yards and was a standout DB, as well.
Micah Franklin (William Blount, soph): Franklin had 1,265 all-purpose yards, 8 TDs and 53 tackles in 11 games.
OFFENSE LINE
Lance Williams (Alcoa, fresh): The 6-2, 285-pound right tackle started for five-time defending state champion Alcoa.
Tyler Jeffries (Greenback, fresh): Jeffries started on offense and defense for the 1A runners-up and picked up an SEC offer.
Camron Gann (Powell, soph): The 6-3, 290-pound Gann helped Powell reach the 5A state quarterfinals.
Hayden Todd (Catholic, soph): The 6-3, 270-pound Todd has two years as a starter under his belt.
Brady Cash (Central, soph): This 6-1, 265-pounder started all 15 games for 5A champion Central.
Trevor Abdella (Maryville, soph): At 6-foot and 275 pounds, Abdella started at right guard for 6A champ Maryville.
Bill Anderson (Fulton, soph): A two-way standout, the 6-2, 260-pound Anderson started at left tackle for the Falcons.
DEFENSE
DEFENSIVE LINE
Dakota Ogle (Powell, soph): A massive 6-4, 320, Ogle gave 32 tackles and three sacks last fall.
Mark Adams Jr. (Central, soph): A defensive end, Adams made 60 tackles with 22.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.
Daven Cozart (Catholic, fresh): At 6-3, 260, Cozart contributed 24.5 tackles for the Irish in 2019.
Zach Braden (Maryville, soph): Braden started for the 6A champs and had 38 tackles and nine tackles for loss.
C.J. King (Oneida, soph): The 6-4, 350-pound King started every game for the Indians in 2019.
Rashard Claridy (Greeneville, soph): The 260-pound tackle made 42 tackles with three forced fumbles.
Malachi Harrison (CAK, soph): Harrison gave the Warriors 68 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and four sacks.
LINEBACKERS
Eli Turner (William Blount, soph): Led Govs in tackles (94) and had nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Dan Stanford (Powell, soph): A sure-tackler, Stanford made 59 tackles, eight QB pressures and three TFLs.
Jacob Berven (Oak Ridge, soph): Berven picked off three passes, made 65 tackles and had three TFLs.
Gavin Noe (Anderson County, fresh): Noe made 65 tackles, including eight tackles for loss and two sacks.
Levi Herald (South-Doyle, soph): Herald made 72 tackles with 13 TFLs, 5.5 sacks and three recovered fumbles.
Major Newman (Alcoa, soph): Newman started for the five-time defending champs and made 75 tackles and four sacks.
Cam Stokes (Fulton, soph): The 250-pound Stokes made 41 tackles and an INT for the Falcons.
Curtis Young (South-Doyle, soph): Young helped South-Doyle win nine games with 77 tackles and six tackles for loss.
Grant Sterchi (CAK, soph): Sterchi helped CAK to an 8-3 mark with 87 tackles, nine TFLs and two interceptions.
Luke Myers (CAK, soph): Myers recorded a whopping 126 tackles and 12 tackles for loss.
Derek Schmidt (Northview Academy, soph): Made 78 tackles, eight TFLs and two blocked field goals.
Leo Bonifacio (Webb, soph): Led Spartans with 72 tackles and also had three sacks.
THE SECONDARY
Nakelin McAfee (TKA, soph): McAfee made 48 tackles with 12 pass breakups and two picks.
Elijah Rogers (West, fresh): Rogers made 40 tackles in addition to his four catches for four TDs.
Gianni Magdos (Powell, fresh): Magdos intercepted three passes, broke up six and had 30 tackles.
Marshaun Bowers (TKA, 8th): Bowers intercepted five passes, broke up seven and made 34 tackles.
Javis Mynatt (Catholic, soph): One of the top DBs around, Mynatt made 27 tackles and six pass breakups.
Denzel Jackson (CAK, soph): Jackson made 95 tackles with seven pass breakups and two INTs.
D.J. Burks (Maryville, soph): The only underclassman in Maryville’s secondary had 44 tackles and three INTs.
Marcellus Jackson (Fulton, fresh): Led team with 51 tackles and also had two interceptions.
KICKERS/PUNTERS
Tyson Siebe (West, fresh): Siebe scored 68 points for the Rebels this past season.
Corbin Price (Maryville, fresh): Price made 76 of 79 PATs and 5 of 7 field goals.
Job Matossian (William Blount, soph): Matossian made a 54-yard field goal; averaged 38 yards per punt this past fall.
Ryan Bolton (Central, soph): Bolton punted 39 times for a 39.2-yard average, downing 20 inside the 20.
