LENOIR CITY – Cody Wilhite was just getting started with his football season Wednesday afternoon.
The senior receiver/slotback/safety for Lenoir City had three touchdown catches and an interception during 7-on-7 scrimmages against Central, Christian Academy of Knoxville, and Copper Basin.
It lasted more than 2 hours, starting in a cool rain and ending in more hot summer sun.
“This is mostly fun for us, just to get the team a little bit of work,” Wilhite said. “For us, it’s good to just see how we can work together and how we mesh.”
Wilhite got most of his work in the first two 45-minute sessions against Central and CAK.
He had two touchdown catches against Central and another TD catch against CAK.
In the third series against Central, Wilhite intercepted a pass by sophomore Ryan Bolton, who spent the day subbing for Bobcats starter Dakota Fawver.
“I thought we looked pretty decent again,” Wilhite said. “We had a good week last week and a good weekend. I think we’re really coming together, and we’ve worked hard.”
Wilhite has football – and sports – in his blood. He’s the son of Richie Wilhite, the former Lenoir City baseball coach who coaches the middle school football team.
“He’s a hard-working kid,” Lenoir City coach Jeff Cortez said of Cody Wilhite. “He’s the son of a coach, so he knows the game really well. He can get coached really hard and takes that well. He’s a tireless worker, smart also, and he’s put himself in a good position to have a good year.”
The Panthers are hoping for the same. They went 5-6 last season, 2-2 in Region 4-5A, and lost at Fulton 46-15 in the first round of the playoffs.
