ALCOA — Brian Nix, the Alcoa head football coach, said he was standing on the sideline with his life flashing before his eyes.
Bearden was on the 1-yard line, trying to punch the football into the end zone to go up two scores and salt away an upset Friday night at Alcoa High School. Time was working against the Tornadoes, with just under five minutes left to play.
But the Bulldogs put the ball on the turf and Alcoa’s Brayden Cornett tried to scoop up the fumble and run. Only he didn’t recover it.
“Brayden Cornett, he’s so opportune, right?” Nix said later. “And we do scoop-and-score (drills) twice a week. We do fumble recovery, scoop and score. Well, he’s right there and he misses the recovery. And I thought, oh God, they’re gonna get the ball back.”
But Alcoa wasn’t done on the play.
And the Tornadoes weren’t done in the game, either.
