CLINTON — The show began on Friday night at Anderson County High before the football even started.
The Mavericks took the field for a game against Jefferson County amid a display of fireworks, smoke and flashing lights. The extraordinary has become part of the usual routine at the school.
“The more pageantry we can add, that’s what this is about,” Anderson County coach Davey Gillum said. “We’re trying to give our kids a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
On this night, the Mavericks reciprocated with quite a performance themselves in a 42-14 victory over the Patriots. Quarterback Stone Hatmaker threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns while a ravenous defense piled up six sacks and 10 tackles for lost yardage.
