The quest for a three-peat got off to the right start Monday for the CAK boys’ golf team.
The Warriors are seeking a third consecutive Division II-A state championship and their opening-day, 1-over 289 total at WillowBrook in Manchester, Tenn., was good enough for first place in the 36-hole event.
They’ll enter Tuesday’s final round with a 12-shot lead over Trinity Christian and 20-shot lead over third-place Battle Ground Academy. Webb School of Knoxville got off to a promising start but slid to fourth (317) by day’s end.
Jackson Hughey’s 2-under 70 led the way for CAK and has him in third place individually, three shots back of Clarksville Academy’s Patton Samuels. Hughey, a sophomore, carded four birdies and two bogeys.
Webb’s Reece Britt and CAK’s Kaleb Wilson and Aaron Frazer are tied for fourth (71) after Day 1.
Eli Mays of Webb is 10th at 74.
On the girls’ Division II-A leaderboard, CAK enters tomorrow’s final round in third place at 18-over 162. The Lady Warriors are 12 shots behind leader FRA.
Allie Cooper led CAK in Round 1 with a 79, landing her in sixth place. Teammate Kate Faulkner is eighth at 83.
The Catholic High School girls’ squad made the Division II-AA state tournament field and occupy third place (14-over 158) after Monday’s round. The Lady Irish are 18 shots back of St. Agnes.
Kennedy Noe, of Catholic, is in third place after a round of 72. She’s only three back of star and leader Rachel Heck.
Region 2 Tournament – Small Division
State Tournament spots were on the line Monday in the Region 2-A/AA Tournament at Sevierville Golf Club.
The Pigeon Forge girls and Kingston boys locked down those team spots.
The Lady Tigers’ 31-over 175 total was spearheaded by Jordan Bouyoucas‘ 5-over 77. She was the only female competitor Monday to break 80; however Greenback’s June Greene’s 87 and Northview’s Campbell Penland‘s 88 proved low enough to advance them to next week’s TSSAA State Tournament at WillowBrook in Manchester.
