It’s elimination time in area soccer, as region semifinals took place on Tuesday. Winners move on to Thursday’s regional finals and also Saturday’s state sectionals (substate).
Losers seasons come to an end.
Here’s a glance at what happened around the area.
CLASS AAA
Region 1
Dobyns-Bennett at Bearden: Hailey Cartt assisted on three first-half goals and scored in the second half. Brinley Murphy added a hat trick and two assists, and the Lady Bulldogs advance to the Region 1-AAA championship Thursday against Science Hill via an 8-0 win over Dobyns-Bennett.
West at Science Hill: The Lady Hilltoppers led by four goals at the break and coasted to a 5-0 win, eliminating the Lady Rebels.
Region 2
Maryville at Oak Ridge: The Lady Rebels scored on a penalty kick in the second half to clinch a spot in the Region 2-AAA championship Thursday thanks to a 3-0 win.
Powell at Hardin Valley: After a scoreless half, Powell and HVA went to overtime tied at 1-all. And when that ended in a draw, PKs ensued. Powell won 6-5 on Hannah Miller’s winning PK.
Region 3
McMinn County defeated Cookeville 4-0 to advance to Thursday’s regional final against visiting Walker Valley.
CLASS AA
Region 1
Pigeon Forge at Greeneville: The Lady Greene Devils knocked off visiting Pigeon Forge, 9-0, behind two goals apiece from Sydney Finchum and Delnna DeBusk. Greeneville will play Seymour in the Region 1-AA championship Thursday.
Sullivan Central at Seymour: The Lady Eagles (10-6-2), which were state runner-up in 2018, eased past Sullivan Central, 5-0, on Tuesday thanks to four goals from Tyler Taff.
Region 2
Grainger at Central: Kylie Haught gave Central a 1-0 lead, and Lyric Fowler’s goal with roughly 13 minutes left put the Lady Bobcats ahead 2-1.
Carter at Gibbs: The Lady Eagles cruised past Carter to a 5-0 win and will host the Region 2-AA championship against Central on Thursday.
Region 3
Livingston Academy at Anderson County: A tremendous season for AC soccer came to an end on penalty kicks against Livingston Academy. The match ended in a 0-0 tie and stayed that way through overtime.
Scott at Cumberland County: Cumberland County won in extra time, 3-1. Julia Butts scored for Scott, per IH Varsity.
CLASS A
Region 1
Cosby at Chuckey-Doak: Leah Murray’s hat trick sparked a 9-3 win for Cosby. The Lady Eagles will face off in the Region 1-A championship Thursday against its District 2-A foe Alcoa, which beat them in last week’s district championship, 5-0. This will be Cosby’s first appearance in a region championship game, per The Newport Plain Talk,.
University High at Alcoa: A pair of first-half goals from Bonnie Lauderback and a University High own goal before the break led to a Lady T 4-1 win. McKinna Murr also added a goal, and Alcoa is looking to improve upon its state semifinal showing from a season ago.
Region 2
Polk County at Oneida: Per IH Varsity, Oneida knocked off Polk County in PKs. Oneida got PK scores from Aliyah Douglas, Alexea Jones and Macy Griffith. The regulation score cam via Laurel Blount. Oneida will welcome Cumberland Gap in the Region 2-A final on Thursday.
Cumberland Gap at Greenback: Cumberland Gap knocked off 3-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Aly Ramsey.
Division II-A
East Region Championship: CAK at Grace Christian, Saturday – CAK defeated Grace in PKs.
Division II-AA
Catholic fell to GPS (16-2) on Thursday, 3-0, in the region championship, but still will move on to face Ensworth on Oct. 26 for the right to move on to the state tournament.
