COALFIELD — Braden Carnes has played enough football to instantly recognize when an opponent’s defensive coverage is a bit skewed toward one player.
And Friday night, the senior quarterback saw Coalfield defenders gravitating toward senior wideout Holden Willis, who entered the night with 862 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns.
“What they were doing was, basically, they were running Cover-4,” said Carnes, who played his first three years at 16-time state champion Maryville before transferring in the offseason to Greenback. “But they already had the backers out so wide that it literally looked like there were three (players) on Holden.
“Even though Holden didn’t get as many catches as he normally does,” Carnes added, “the confidence I have in everyone else is huge.”
That showed. The rest of Greenback’s offensive standouts wound up with opportunities galore, and they took full advantage in a 45-20 win behind five touchdown passes from Carnes.
