Two teams expected to contend for this year’s Class AA state soccer championship faced each other Thursday night in the Bearden Invitational.
Senior forward Austin Beets scored two goals and led Greeneville to a 3-1 victory over Alcoa. Both teams lost in state championship matches last spring in penalty-kick shootouts.
In the Class AA final, Greeneville lost to Valor College Prep of Nashville 4-3 in the PK shootout after the two teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation play and overtimes.
In the Class A final, Madison Magnet of Jackson defeated Alcoa 4-2 in the PK shootout after the teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation and overtimes.
Alcoa moved up from Class A to Class AA in this year’s reclassification cycle.
