MUFREESBORO — The Maryville High School girls’ track & field team did something it has never done Thursday night at the TSSAA Championships at Middle Tennessee State.
And it just might spur on similar successes or better in the future.
The Lady Rebels finished in second place in the Division I – Large Class competition with 63 points, just nine points behind Whitehaven. The Maryville girls have never finished that well, save for a third-place finish in 2008.
“We knew coming into this year that, with the freshman class that we had and the kids we had coming back, we had a chance to possibly win the whole thing,” said Maryville coach Nick White.
“I tell you what, they did about as good as they could do, across the board.”
Maryville senior Georgie McDevitt, a Wofford signee, set the tone Thursday, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.89 and finishing second in the 200 (24.05) and the triple-jump (38-7).
She anchored the 4 x 100 that Maryville won in 47.06, just a slight step behind the state record. Olivia Scott ran the first leg. Madeline Matzek ran the second leg, and senior Rylee Jorgensen — a Wofford signee — ran the third leg.
“Georgie she went toe-to-toe with an SEC athlete who is going to Ole Miss. She beat her in the 100 and finished second in the 200,” said White. “We almost broke the state record in the 4 x 100.
“Georgie was involved in 36 points.”
The Lady Rebels’ talented group of freshmen then started racking up points. Lilly Lang won the girls high jump at 5-6. Andie-Marie Jones claimed second in the 3200 (10:50.46).
“We brought five freshman girls down,” said White. “For them to be able to come down and get to experience it at a level they competed at is good for us in the long run.”
Other local notables include: Jefferson County junior Jaycee Schroeder finished second in both the shot put (44-4) and discus (125-11). Kendall Medders, a Halls junior, claimed second in the high jump.
Anderson County senior Brittany Bishop won the pole vault at 13-0 and finished second in the 110-hurdles (15.00).
Catholic’s Eleanor Mancini, a junior, claimed second in the 800 at 2:15.61.
Knoxville West won the 4 x 800 in 9:33.34. HVA finished second in the 4 x 200 (1:41.62).
In the boys’ competition, Jake Renfree of Catholic dominated as expected. He won the 1600 in 4:14.30 and the 800 in 1:53.80. He did not run the 3200.
Shea DeGraaf, a West senior, was second in the pole vault (15-00). Campbell County senior Christian Shouse wound up second in the long jump (22-6.25). Chase Smith of Sevier County was second in the shot put (53-7.5).
South-Doyle football star Elijah Young was third in the 100 but moved up to second in the 200 (21.67).
And the HVA boys took second in the 4 x 400 at 3:19.19.
