Webb School of Knoxville’s basketball teams won Division II-AA East Region championships Friday night on their home floor, making their paths to the state Final Four less difficult.
And they went about earning region titles much differently.
The Lady Spartans coasted to a 58-35 victory over visiting Catholic, defeating the two-time defending state champion for the third time this season.
In Friday’s second game, the Spartans blew a 15-point lead in the second half but got a layup in the closing seconds for a 53-51 victory over Chattanooga Baylor.
Webb’s boys and girls are in the state’s round-of-16, and by winning region titles, have byes into the quarterfinals, in which they play on their home court late next week.
The Spartans (24-2) and Lady Spartans (25-3) are ranked No. 1 in the state by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.
