Senior Bailor Hughes answered the call and then some for Powell in its season-opening showdown against visiting Greeneville Thursday night at Scarbro Stadium.
With junior standout Fernando Frances sidelined (knee), Hughes stepped in at running back and rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries as the Panthers handed the two-time defending state Class 4A champion Greene Devils a 19-17 loss.
Lightning delays nearly cancelled the game, but the two teams ultimately agreed upon on a 9:05 p.m. kickoff time.
The defeat ended Greeneville’s two-year aura of invincibility and 30-game winning streak.
