ALCOA – They weren’t keeping score Friday night, but Alcoa reached the end zone four times in a scrimmage against West in what appeared to be the starting units for both teams.
West got into the end zone two times against Alcoa’s starters – but once after getting stopped on downs and getting a new set of downs, starting at Alcoa’s 20-yard line.
“You play Alcoa, you’re going to find out what you’re good at and what you need to work on very quickly,” West coach Lamar Brown said. “I like our kids’ effort. I thought we had some bright spots. We’re going to spend a lot of time watching film Monday. It’s going to a good teaching for us.”
West was 4-7 last year and lost in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs to Catholic.
Alcoa went 15-0 last year and is four-time defending state champion in Class 3A.
As his backups took the field, Alcoa coach Gary Rankin had his starters running wind sprints in one of the end zones until the scrimmage ended.
“We had fun. We scrambled around pretty good,” Rankin said. “We certainly made some mistakes, made some coaching mistakes, but our kids had fun. They scrambled around, and West is a good football team, so it was a good scrimmage.”
