Emory Lanier considered the circumstances and braced for what he thought was likely inevitable.
Webb School’s lead in a Division II-A state sectional game had shrunk to two points. The game clock at Webb’s gym was under 10 seconds. And Luke Howard had set a course directly toward the rim. The Harding Academy center had sufficient ball-handling skills. Being 6-foot-8, he also had a clear view of a potential game-tying basket.
The 6-3 Lanier, Webb’s junior guard, had started the possession as Howard’s defender. Lanier said that a double screen left him essentially to be a spectator.
“I was thinking about overtime,” he said.
Webb coach Ricky Norris feared even worse.
