Every February, the Maryville High School football coaching staff convenes for a full day of planning.
“It’s kind of like a professional development day — except, for football,” said head coach Derek Hunt
And that day of planning is largely based upon the creation and structuring of a depth chart for the coming season.
“That’s when you can really learn the most and make the most decisions,” Hunt added. “You can really see what you’ve got and move pieces around, move guys around. … and from that, we can say, ‘Here’s what we think our strengths will be, maybe our identity as an offense or defense.
“Then we split up and work on installing stuff for spring towards what we think our strengths will be.”
The Maryville staff had plenty to do in its meeting this past February.
The Rebels lost 17 starters to graduation from their run to the 2022 Class 6A state semifinals.
The program has already completed its 2023 spring practice.
