UPDATE #1 (Morning wave)
Webb School of Knoxville took another step toward its sixth consecutive Division II-A state volleyball championship Tuesday morning.
The Lady Spartans (34-7) swept St. George’s (19-15) in three sets at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, winning 25-10, 25-7, 25-9.
Webb will play Harding Academy (30-10) at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Siegel High in the winners-bracket final of the four-team format. Harding Academy defeated Concord Christian in four sets Tuesday.
The Lady Spartans are two victories from another state title.
St. George’s drops into the losers bracket. It plays Concord at 4:30 ET Tuesday.
UPDATE #2 (morning/early afternoon)
Gatlinburg-Pittman and Concord Christian dropped their opening matches Tuesday.
In Class A, Watertown knocked off G-P 25-14, 25-24, 25-22 to send the Lady Highlanders into an elimination game Tuesday night (7:30 p.m. Eastern) against Halls (20-14).
In Division II-A, Concord Christian School came out on fire, winning the first set 25-8 over Harding Academy. But Harding responded in a major way for the 8-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-20 victory. Concord (34-11) will play St. George’s (19-15) at 4:30 p.m. (Eastern) Tuesday in an elimination game.
UPDATE #3 (Evening wave)
Catholic (24-8) made quick work of its first-round opponent. The Lady Irish defeated South Side (44-8) in three straight sets: 25-16, 25-12, 25-15. Catholic, the 2016 state champion in Class AA, plays again Tuesday night at MTSU against East Hamilton (29-2).
Meanwhile, Heritage dropped the opening match of its maiden journey to the state tournament in five sets to Siegel, 25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 25-16,15-7.
The Lady Mountaineers (29-7) fall into an elimination match tonight (9 p.m. Eastern) against Collierville (30-13).
Concord Christian eliminated St. George’s 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 in the nightcap matches of the Division II-A. Concord advances to Wednesday’s state semifinals, where it will play at 2 p.m. Eastern against the loser of the Webb/Harding match from Wednesday morning.
Catholic defeated East Hamilton in three sets — 31-29, 25-21, 27-25 — to advance to Wednesday’s state semifinals in Class AA. The Lady Irish will play Portland (42-7).
Catholic will have to lose two twice Wednesday to not reach Thursday’s state championship.
