DECATUR – Brooke (McKinnon) Evans knew what she was getting into when she took over as the Tellico Plains girls’ basketball coach before this season.
Evans was an all-state player for coach Gary Tucker at Tellico Plains, where she graduated in 2007 before an All-American career at Lee University.
Tucker won 843 games in 47 years coaching the Lady Bears before announcing his retirement last April.
“It’s unbelievably hard to follow him,” Evans said. “He’s a legend, but he’s always been very close to me. I played for him. I coached with him for three years a couple of years ago. He’s just been a light and a mentor in my life my whole life.”
Tucker would have been proud of his protegee Friday afternoon.
