An on-court altercation between a Lenoir City High School girls’ basketball player and Fulton girls’ basketball player late in Monday’s District 5-3A Tournament Championship caused a lengthy delay, a gym to be emptied and teams sent to their locker rooms before play could resume.
And while Fulton ultimately won the contest, the final buzzer only kickstarted a timer on when a ruling from the TSSAA would come down about what punishments there may be and about what the postseason fates of the teams are.
Why? One player from Lenoir City was ejected and three from Fulton. Given how last season’s Farragut/William Blount boys’ on-court confrontation almost saw both teams’ seasons terminated immediately in the region tournament, many around Knoxville wondered if similar punishment might befall Fulton and Lenoir City.
The TSSAA issued its ruling late Wednesday afternoon.
