Catholic volleyball coach Brent Carter welcomes a challenge, and he’s got one this season.
The Lady Irish make the move from Division I Class AA to Division II-AA as they attempt to reach the state championship match for the fifth consecutive year.
“It’s exciting for us because we get better competition throughout the district schedule,” Carter said of the move to Division II-AA. “It’s more travel but we’ve always tried to play as competitive schedule as we can.
“We’re excited to make a fifth run at state. It will be harder this year because only four teams go.”
Catholic finished 26-10 last year after a three-set loss to Portland in the Class AA state championship match.
The Lady Irish also lost to Portland in the 2017 final, beat Signal Mountain in the 2016 final, and lost to Sullivan South in the 2015 final.
Carter likes his 2019 team, which includes eight seniors.
“This is the deepest team I’ve ever had,” Carter said. “I’m not saying it’s the best team I’ve ever had, but it’s the deepest.”
